Immigration:

Program assistants requiring visas will receive guidelines and assistance from International Programs. Each foreign country has the right to establish its own parameters for the granting of a visa, all International Programs program assistants are expected to abide by these requirements. It is noteworthy that not all program assistants will be required to apply for a visa as immigration laws, visa requirements, and application processes vary depending on individuals’ citizenship, the location, and duration of their appointment. More specific information about visa requirements will be provided to those who’ve been offered and accepted a program assistant position with International Programs. Below are general immigration rules and regulations you should consider before applying for a program assistant position:

  • All program assistants must be able to obtain a valid passport book that has a minimum of six months of additional validity beyond the end of their appointment. It is highly recommended to anyone considering applying for a PA position to check and update their passport if necessary.
  • All program assistants should avoid planning any international travel in the three months leading up to their appointment.
    • Please be advised that those requiring a visa must submit their passport to the International Programs office or a foreign consulate for processing during this period. It is important to note that the visa is not issued as a sepa rate document; rather, it is a large seal that will be affixed to the inside of your passport. As a result, you will not have access to your passport while the visa is being processed.
    • For U.S. citizens who do not require visas because your appointment is less than 90 days, it is important to avoid any international travel in the three months leading up to your appointment. This is because you will be entering the Schengen Area under the 90-day permitted tourist travel limit. Traveling during this three-month period may cause you to inadvertently start your 90-day count, which could prevent you from completing your entire appointment.
      • Please note that regulations for permitted visa-free tourist travel may differ for individuals with dual citizenship or non-U.S. citizens.
    • Due to restrictions on permitted visa-free travel and visa validity dates, you may not have the ability to conduct independent international travel before or after your pre-approved travel dates. If you are hired and wish to travel outside of your approved travel dates, you must seek approval for your plans from the International Programs Immigration Team.
