Program History
The FSU Florence program began in 1964, when the idea for an FSU campus in Italy was conceived in Fiesole during the FSU Flying High Circus’s European tour that year. In 1966, students arrived for the first FSU Florence study abroad program under the direction of Dr. Eugene Tanzy. Soon after the students' arrival, the Arno river flooded, endangering the art and history of the city as mud flooded into museums and libraries. The students chose to stay on the program to help with recovery efforts, earning recognition as “Mud Angels” for their assistance.
Over the decades, the program has grown with many areas of study added to the curriculum, including archaeology and excavation work at the Cetamura dig site. In 2018, students on the Cetamura program discovered 190 silver Roman coins, now on display at a museum in Chianti. In 2021, FSU Florence moved its home to the renovated Bagnesi Palace in the heart of Florence.
